What should you know about social media usage during divorce?

On Behalf of | Feb 18, 2025 | Divorce & Legal Separation |

Social media is a part of everyday life for many people. Some people share just about every aspect of their life on social media platforms. This includes making posts about the positive things that are going on in their life, as well as venting when things aren’t.

If you’re an avid social media user, you may need to carefully consider your activities on every platform if you’re going through a divorce. You may need to completely stop using social media throughout the duration of the divorce proceedings or you may opt to limit your activity.

Why does it matter what you post on social media?

Everything you say and do on social media can be used in your ex’s case against you. Because of this, you must think about how things may be construed when you post them. If there’s any chance that a status, comment or photo might be taken the wrong way, you may need to avoid posting it. In these cases, perception is sometimes the most important consideration.

One thing you must remember is that you can’t delete anything and think that it won’t ever be seen again. People can take screenshots of anything you post and share them with your ex, who could then use them against you.

Social media activity is only one thing that may be considered during a divorce. Working with someone who can assist you with learning more about the process and what may impact your divorce may be beneficial.
